Fire Safety

In Jamaica most houses are equipped with window grilles and bars, making escaping the house difficult in the event of an emergency.

If you have window grilles and bars, review fire safety procedures with your household.

If possible do not block bedroom windows with permanent grilles if the windows may be used for emergency egress.

You can also make an emergency fire plan with your family or install a fire detector.

Cyber Security

Do not open emails from unknown senders. Emails are an avenue for sending viruses to computers; opening unknown emails could result in your computer being 'infested' with a virus.
TIP: you can download free antivirus tools online.

Community Security

Getting to know your neighbors is not only courteous but can be helpful in the event of an emergency.

For example, if you arrive home and find a stranger in your house its good to seek refuge in a place you feel safe, with people you trust until the police arrive.

Also, if you have children, they should be familiar with their neighbors so they know who to ask for help in the case of an emergency.

Passwords and PINs

Email accounts, social networks, ATM's and even cell phones, all require you to have a password or pin to gain access to whatever information is stored there. Choose passwords wisely; mix alpha and numeric characters, do not use your birthday or things that can be guessed easily.
