Getting to know your neighbors is not only courteous but can be helpful in the event of an emergency.
For example, if you arrive home and find a stranger in your house its good to seek refuge in a place you feel safe, with people you trust until the police arrive.
Also, if you have children, they should be familiar with their neighbors so they know who to ask for help in the case of an emergency.
